Vision

To become a leading mentorship program for those interested in excelling in scholarly pursuits in the community.

Mission

To train and create an environment where upcoming scholars and scholarly novices are nurtured to actively participate and become competitive in the scholarly community.

About the program

Established in September 2024, the Scholarly Mentorship Program (SMP) was created to help emerging scholars reach their full potential within the academic community.

This includes all types of individuals engaged in the knowledge industry, such as graduate research students, fellows, lecturers in research or academic institutions, and those wishing to pursue a position in an academic or research setting (and want to prepare themselves in advance).

What do we offer?

We offer world-class, up-to-date, step-by-step mentorship sessions that guide participants from writing basic parts of a scholarly paper to producing a range of scholarly outputs, including books, journal articles, and more. We offer both general and personalized training options, progressing gradually until participants can independently create a range of academic works. These include various types of outputs, such as original articles, review articles, perspectives, opinion papers, chapters in edited volumes, dissertations, and monographs. Additionally, our training sessions include discussions relevant to both the natural and social sciences.

Our sessions include training in data collection, management, and analysis across different areas (related services are listed under the Services section: here). In line with this, participants also benefit from trials of the training or related projects at the THRIVE Research and Innovations Facility (THRAIF)

as well as support for data collection for the research they may be engaged in.

For more details, please visit our scholarly units page, specifically the page of TRISU. Under the guidance of scholarly mentorship, we also provide support on writing research projects and other academic endeavours.

How does it work?

We offer weekly, monthly, biannual, and annual training sessions. These sessions cover a variety of content and material, including, among others, the following:

  • How to identify a research idea for a research undertaking and maintain a scientific attitude or stance throughout.
  • From research idea to a research concept (including insights for a research grant application): a step-by-step guide
  • Gap Analysis and Problem Statement
  • Dissertation and Systematic Review
  • Developing a Rigorous Research Methodology (social & natural sciences)
  • Digital data collection & management
  • Designing surveys
  • Data Analysis (Statistical & nonstatistical packages).
  • Statistical mentorship
  • Scholarly Writing – Original articles
  • Scholarly Writing – Systematic reviews
  • Scholarly Writing – Perspective or Opinion article
  • Scholarly Writing – Edited volume chapter or monograph
  • Argumentation in scholarly writing
  • Selection of credible journals and the submission process
  • Dealing with reviewers’ comments
  • GIS & Map Production for researchers

Each of these can be offered specially. Otherwise, please get the existing shared from the TRSIU page. Likely, the package you are looking for is not yet listed here. If so, mention it in the application form. We will arrange for trainers to assist with such special packages.

Regarding the duration, some trainees may select specific packages, while others might choose to participate throughout the year, in line with the types of scholarly works they are involved in. We recommend following the annual cycles for doctoral students and other scholarly novices (incl. some postdocs). This allows them to have the opportunity to conduct any scholarly consultations with members or other staff at TRISU at no cost, as they will already be considered mentees, including attending the weekly mentorship sessions.

Who qualifies to participate?

Anyone engaged in a field that requires scholarly outputs, either for promotion at the university or career development. This includes all types of individuals or groups employed in the knowledge industry, such as graduate researchers and academic staff (lecturers or researchers), as well as those who wish to pursue a position in an academic or research setting and want to prepare themselves in advance. If you are one of these, we’ve got you covered.

How to apply

Expressions of interest are made electronically via the provided link here at any time. Please note that TRISU operates on a cohort system for those who choose to follow the program throughout the year(s) of research undertaking (mainly applicable to doctoral students); each application is assigned to a specific cohort. There is a cap on the number of participants in a cohort, depending on the available spaces, virtual and/or physical, at TRISU.
